The Sproxton Cross (Click for more detail)

The wheel-headed cross already mentioned stands a few yards to the south east of the porch. This is the only complete pre- Conquest cross in Leicestershire. The shaft displays interlace and beasts, and stands in its original socket. Taken down at the Reformation, it was found doing service as a footbridge over a ditch, hence the shaling on one side. It was rediscovered by William Mountsey, vicar of Sproxton 1791-1818, whose memorial may be seen, along with that of his wife, Elizabeth (obit 1834) inside the tower. Reverend and Mrs Mountsey's tomb is to be seen to the north of the church, close to the nave wall.
